Why would a mother goose leave her baby?

My parents live on a golf course and they just found a baby goose, all alone in the parking lot of the pro shop. Why would the mom leave it, and what should they do?

The mother may have been frightened away or even run over. They can leave it for a while and see if mom comes back or they can adopt it and give it a home. You could also try calling Animal Control.
