Can’t connect my new ipod to my new 2007 VW city golf?

I just bought a brand new 2007 VW city golf and a brand new 4GB ipod, and am having trouble connecting the ipod to the car stereo. I bought a charger that says its for ipods, I connect it into the lighter plug and into the ipod, but nothing happens. Not even when I press the band or mode buttons.
Can anyone help me get my music to play?

Based on what you wrote you bought a battery charger – not an iPod-to-stereo cable. The car lighter is not connected to the speakers, it’s only connected to the cars battery.

There are 4 options for listening to your iPod in your car. I listed them in order of sound quality (1 & 2 are equal in sound quality):

1. Connect an “RCA to headphone jack” cable into the aux inputs in the BACK of your car stereo deck (if your car has aux inputs). Here’s a picture of what the cable looks like: http://www.rueducommerce.fr/hifi/images/…
The Cable only costs a few bucks. Installation will cost you anywhere from $50-150 depending on the car/stereo/install company (unless you feel confident pulling out your stereo deck yourself – definitely make sure that your stereo as the aux inputs before you do anything). If your car has a stock stereo deck you can most likely assume that it does NOT have aux inputs.
2. Connect your iPod up to the aux input in the FRONT of the stereo deck (which you probably don’t have since you are asking this question).
3. Connect a cassette tape adapter to iPod if you have a tape deck.
4. Use an FM transmitter, which allows you to listen to the iPod through your FM radio (wireless). The sound quality is usually pretty poor and you are subject to inconsistent radio frequencies. It is your only option if you can’t do one of the first three options.
