Winning the Mental Game of Golf
There are many aspects to playing golf, you’ll often find that some players are unable to achieve great scores during a game until they have mastered each aspect and there can be many more aspects than we may think as there are many different and testing shots to make. One of the key skills golfers will have to learn in order to learn and succeed at golf is to become mentally strong and composed to make tough shots as well as recovering from poor shots.
Golf is often thought of as a meeting of the physical and mental abilities as golfers will need to think a lot as well as relying on their physical skill when it comes to golf, whether it is choosing where is best to land the ball for the next shot or reading the sloping surface of the putting green to know how much power you will need in order to make the shot.
One of the most testing mental aspects of golf is getting yourself out of a bad situation, whether it is a bunker shot or being deep in the trees or the tall grass. A lot of players may feel disappointed or frustrated when a shot skews off the fairway; this can begin a slippery slope though towards a shocking round of golf.
Recovering from a bunker shot or similar hazards requires the player to feel optimistic and perhaps a bit calculating as to how they can make the deficit up in the next hole or two. If this is the last hole of the day though you may not be sure to seal the win but this doesn’t mean it was a wasted game. Many pro golfers will have caddies who can provide advice or inform the player of where they had gone wrong. Whilst some players may not want to hear it this outsider’s view can help us see little things such as an incorrect swinging motion.
Whilst we may not have caddies playing golf with a friend and agreeing to help each other out as well as having a bit of friendly competition can help both of you develop further at the game of golf and notice little areas where we may have been going wrong. This can help as it can be like getting free golf lesson which many golfers would welcome.
So make sure that as well as the physical ability we need a strong mental ability when it comes to golf, being able to recover from a series of poor shots can makes the difference between a win and a loss.
